Client work: AEG Card Illustrations

AEG: Mindful Owl by Kiri Østergaard Leonard, 2015
AEG: Druid Spring by Kiri Østergaard Leonard, 2015

Here are some new card illustrations I recently did for Alderac Entertainment Group for an upcoming game.

Kat G Birmelin, who has been a guest blogger here, was so kind as to suggest me to the art director. I was assigned three really fun cards to do; a mindful owl (druid companion), a dangerous seed with a black streak running through it and a spring feeding the druid grove.

It differs a little from art director to art director which process they prefer, but the standard is thumbnail sketches ->  clean drawing -> color rough -> final illustration. For this project I was just asked for three thumbnails for each card, a color rough and then finals. I like having free reigns like that, it makes the project all the more enjoyable to work on.

The artwork for card illustrations is printed very small, so it’s really important that the illustrations reads well at that scale. The thumbnail, being tiny by nature, helps to solidify that. Here are a sample of the thumbnails I submitted.
