illustration of the hunchback of notre dame and Esmeralda

Client Work: The Hunchback of Notre Dame

When I was commissioned to illustrate the Hunchback of Notre Dame I knew right away I wanted to capture a really emotional moment, at first I had thought of doing the grave where Quasimodo’s body is found embracing Esmeralda’s remains but I ended up picking the scene where he is being tortured upon the wheel instead. It’s a very powerful scene because of the suffering he undergoes and Esmeralda’s response. She, as the only, takes pity on him when he cries for water after having been tortured and ridiculed, yet she is still hesitant and scared of him because of his misshapen apperance.

The project
During New York Comic Con this year I was approached by an Art Collector named Michael Phifer. He wanted to put an art book together specifically for Fantasy and Sci-fi Art collectors. I was commissioned among many other artists to create a piece for this upcoming book. The book is named Lands and Legends and will be published by Michael Publishing.

About the book:
Volume One: Lands and Legends is a book of fine art from the world of fantasy. The book is a 9” by 12” dark green faux leather cover, embossed on the front and spine with the title in metallic gold ink and a matching slip case. The slip case has a thumb cut on each side to remove the book.

The book contains more than 175 full-color paintings of fabled lands and subjects from many of the most famous illustrators and cover artists of our time. These artists are from the fields of illustration, comics, fantasy, science fiction and gaming. This is the largest single gathjering of fantasy artists ever done in one volume.

The book is limited to 3,800 numbered copies worldwide and more than 175 artists’ proof copies, one for each artist. It retails for $125 and is sold directly from our web site or at our booth at comic book, WFC™, Worldcon™ and other convention venues. Check for our convention appearances on this web site under the APPEARANCES tab.

The book, which costs $125, can be ordered here:
