Green Witch Tarot: 3 of Athames

Disclaimer for new readers: Welcome! I am in the process of illustrating a full tarot deck for Llewellyn Worldwide, the artwork has been shared here with permission from the editor. There is no release date yet for the deck, but it should be some time in 2015. It will be a full 78 card deck with no borders. The author behind the project is Ann Moura, who is widely known for her Green Witch books.

The overall process
I’ve now completed 54 out of 79 cards. It’s really exciting that I can start to see the end of the project draw near. I’m looking so much forward to seeing it all in print.

 The symbolism
The 3 of Athames bears the symbols of the plant motherwort, for confidence, warding negativity and protection, and the animal Swan for changes, quest and transformation. Traditionally the 3 of Swords is a card with a difficult message. The Rider-Waite illustration has a heart suspended in the air pierced by 3 swords, however the Green Witch Tarot differs and have a more hopeful symbolism.

The illustration process
I really enjoyed working with the colors in this card, the last batch I did were all in warm autumn colors so they was a welcome change.

Pre-order and limited edition
I’ve had several requests regarding pre-orders of the deck. As the deck is published by Llewellyn they will handle the majority of the sale. I will have a limited amount of Artist’s Copies available that I am planning on doing some limited edition fun with, perhaps involving some prints of a couple of the cards. If you’d be interested in a limited edition please let me know in the comments.

Art book?
I’ve also considering doing an art book on the full illustration process of the deck. It would show my process from sketch to final on many of the cards and have all the final art from the deck in it along with a few extra pieces. If this is of interest to you please let me know.
