Green Witch Tarot: The Star

Disclaimer for new readers: Welcome! I am in the process of illustrating a full tarot deck for Llewellyn Worldwide, the artwork has been shared here with permission from the editor. There is no release date yet for the deck, but it should be sometime in 2015. It will be a full 78 card deck with no borders. The author behind the project is Ann Moura, who is widely known for her Green Witch books.

I have been pretty excited to share this card as it is one of my favourites so far. The card is called ‘The Star’. The fairy Queen stands in a river and pours water into a scrying bowl as well as the river. St. Johns Wort grows around the scrying bowl, it is a symbol of fairies, magic and luck. The goldfish that leaps out of the river is a symbol of opportunities and balance.

This illustration underwent a few changes along the way. The art director and author both agreed that the initial sketch (see top of the post) had the fairy looking too much like a belly dancer, I did a few more and #3 was selected for the final. I honestly liked the initial sketch better because it felt more dynamic to me, but I can definitely see how they got a belly dancer vibe from it.

From there on it was trying to find the right colors. I had an idea of working with earth tones and a dark turquiose but eventually it turned more towards blue tones and lastly I ended up pulling more earth tones back in. Colouring can be an exploration process and it’s always an exciting part to me. I love colors and I love finding interesting color combinations. As with the other cards I have compiled a gif file where you can see the full process:

This is a lovely card, Kiri. Thanks for sharing it. I particularly like being able to see (experience) the whole process. It is fascinating to see how it takes shape. Each card is one step closer, for me, to working with this deck! Cat
