Disclaimer for new readers: Welcome! I am in the process of illustrating a full tarot deck for Llewellyn Worldwide, the artwork has been shared here with permission from the editor. There is no release date yet for the deck, but it should be sometime in 2015. It will be a full 78 card deck with no borders. The author behind the project is Ann Moura, who is widely known for her Green Witch books.
Here is final illustration for The World Tree. Traditionally in Tarot this card relates to The World. The tree is an Ash Tree, like that of Yggdrasil; the World Tree from Norse Mythology.
Symbolically the Ash Tree stands for stability, magical strength, connections and spirits. To symbolize the year Ann Moura requested the leaves be painted in transition of the seasons, which is further symbolized by the Crane flying overhead.
When the deck is complete there will be more thorough descriptions of the cards and their meaning in the book Ann Moura is writing to go along with the deck. At current I have completed 16 illustrations for the project out of 79.
The illustration process for this card was fairly painless. The original sketch had the tree centered in the middle but as I progress with the piece I realized it would give the card a much more dynamic and powerful view to utilize the Dutch Angle. When I sent the colored version to the author and Art Director for approval they agreed with my assessment. Here is a gif file of the full process for your viewing pleasure:
Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed this little look into my illustration process. As always I’d love to hear from you, so please leave a comment. If you like the artwork I would also like to encourage you to share it with your friends.
