Snail Mail: Yuletide Snails

Illustration of a Christmas Rudolf Snail. Art by Kiri Østergaard Leonard, 2016

Rudolf Snail, 2016

The newest additional to the Snail Mail series is Snail-buk, inspired by the Nordic Christmas decoration known as the ‘Julebuk’ (Danish) (Translation: Yule Goat). The Julebuk is a goat made out of straw tied with red ribbons. Although its true origin is unknown, there are some speculation it is of pagan Germanic origin, it is considered one of the eldest Nordic Christmas symbols.

Growing up in Denmark with the decorations always being present in our house around Christmas, so I thought it would be a fun addition to the series.

I have also revised Rudolf snail, it is fun to see how much I have learned since I first painted him in 2013.

The new snail mail postcards with all the Holiday Snails are now available in the Art Shop!
