Pencil drawing of a unicorn by Kiri Østergaard Leonard, 2015.

Unicorn Sketches

Unicorns are immortal. It is their nature to live alone in one place: usually a forest where there is a pool clear enough for them to see themselves-for they are a little vain, knowing themselves to be the most beautiful creatures in all the world, and magic besides.`` ― Peter S. Beagle, The Last Unicorn

I’ve been making at effort at paying more attention to my sketchbook lately. I really want to improve my drawing skills and to do that I have to draw more. As much as I like digital it has resulted in my drawings being lazy. I skip over the drawing too easily when I can always paint on top – it’s not a good approach. A wonky drawing shines through in the end no matter how much you render. So drawing before paint, time to learn. Here’s a group of unicorns to begin with!

Thanks Melody! I’m considering if I should do a whole calendar-series with the unicorns.

You’re welcome! 🙂 Yes, a calendar would be a great idea! especially with a full page “unicorn” per month, on a good quality paper that would allow us to keep the pictures, or frame our fav! 🙂
(Sorry to answer you so late, but things I’ve been crazy lately lol…)

Forgot to ask… will you be doing it in color?

It would definitely be in color, yes! My schedule is a little crazy this fall though so I might not be able to do it until next year.
