Halloween is a fantastic, colorful and much beloved holiday in the US, but in Denmark, where I am from, it was not celebrated until recent years. Despite of not growing up with it I really like Halloween, I love the feeling of fall, I love the pumpkins, the colors, the costumes, the funny spooky decor and I love painting Halloween illustrations, though it wasn’t always so.
In 2009, when I was still living in Denmark and didn’t know what to do with my life, I fell in love with this charming American guy, who was a freelance illustrator. Being young and in love, I was over eager to impress him with my drawing skills (which really weren’t impressive in the slightest at the time). Nonetheless I began drawing every day, sending him daily updates of painstakingly created drawings to take a gander at.
Despite my unpracticed drawing skills, he was gracious and encouraged and guided me to keep going, to improve and apply to art school.
During that year, being in love with an American and therefore interested in American culture, I did my first Halloween drawing of a snail with a pumpkin shell. This drawing spurred on a tradition of doing at least one Halloween illustration every year and over the years it has grown to a nice little collection, that I am happy to share with you today.
As for the love story, it has a happy ending. This year we celebrated our 5 year anniversary.
