Sleeping Beauty by Kiri Østergaard Leonard in Season One of Infected by Art

An opportunity for artists: Infected by Art

It’s important for your illustration career to keep an eye out for opportunities. More often than not opportunities are something you have to create for yourself by putting your work out there for the public to see.

Entering art book annuals is a good way to create opportunities for yourself, however you have to be willing to cash out a little to make this possible and the reward isn’t always immediate. None the less I firmly believe it is worth your effort to do so. Creating exposure for your artwork is key to building a name for yourself. Some of the more popular art book annuals are Spectrum Art of the Fantastic and the New York City Society of Illustrator’s annual. The competition for these annuals is steep which makes it extremely difficult to get in, even if your work is top of the line.

Sleeping Beauty / Talia, Sun and Moon by Kiri Østergaard Leonard, 2013

In the spring of 2013 a new art book annual named Infected by Art for Fantasy and Sci-fi artwork launched. It’s is run as a large competition where you submit your artwork for a fee and then have friends and family vote on your submission, after the voting a jury goes through the submission and select which pieces get into the art book. I believe the online voting system mainly affect the cash prices for the artists who win gold, silver and bronze, whereas the jury pick the artwork for the book that they like regardless of the votes.

Being fairly new to the illustration industry I honestly doubted my chances but in the spring I submitted my Sleeping Beauty piece for the first season of Infected by Art and was fortunate enough to have my work selected to go into the book and recently I received the book in the mail.

Let me just say it is a confidence booster to see your work printed in an illustration annual alongside many other skilled artists and it is a testimony to the quality of your work.
