Painting Time-lapse: Radiance

In August I was commissioned to do two illustrations for the Chen Bochui International Children’s Literature Award in Shanghai, China. The illustrations were to be based on the award-winning children’s book Shh We Have a Plan.

In the book, four children are fruitlessly chasing birds in the woods, only for the bird/birds to always escape them. It is a really cute and simple story. I knew I wanted to work with a scene that features a lot of bright colored birds. Because of the book being for a young audience, I opted for a heavier cartoon-inspired look to the characters, rather than my usual semi-realistic approach.

I also recorded my first full painting time-lapse so you can see how the painting developed from thumbnail sketch to final. The piece took 5 hours all in all so this is heavily sped up.

Enjoy and please let me know if you would like to see more painting time lapses.
