  • I thought the old ones were all gone. I was sure of it. That was until I came across him on a walk in the woods. He was just standing there, among the trees. Seemingly enjoying the feeling of the wind rustling through his leaves, then he turned to me and smiled. I've rarely known such calm. It was as if the knowledge of the ages washed over me and left me with the feeling that everything was going to be okay.
This piece was inspired by the rich folklore of trolls from Scandinavia. Our villages and shores are brimming with tales of encounter with them. As a child, I always thought if you stared long enough into the woods, you'd be able to see them. As an adult, I came to realize all the stories served such an important purpose back in the day. They served as warnings, explanations, or even excuses for our human behavior told in a manner that was so memorable we still share those stories today. Hundreds of years later. The bride who was kidnapped by trolls on her wedding day (Truthfully she probably ran away because she didn't want to be married.) The troll who exchanged her baby for that of the humans? The baby was probably ill and the parents didn't know how to treat it. Does it take away the magic? I'll leave that for you to decide, but we, as human beings, have always turned to stories and stories have aided us through our lives, taught us lessons, helped us cope and they still do to this day. That being said, I still stare into the woods when I walk by them and I still wonder - are there other beings in there? Original 9" x 11" pencil on paper. This piece has been lovingly matted with a beautiful acid-free double mat to fit a 16" x 20" frame and protect the artwork.
