In 1890 stories of a mythical being looking as a cross between giraffe, zebra and a donkey reached Britain, the stories were dismissed as mere fantasy like the tales of the centaur, but in 1901 Sir Harry Johnston set out to find this creature of so called legend. He successfully obtained a skin and skulls from an okapi and thus proved the creature’s existence, the animal was named Okapi Johnsoni after the explorer and thus the legend of the African Unicorn was put to rest.
Little did Mr. Johnston know the mythical being still wandered the Savannah though it was not a unicorn.
